In health communication intervention programs, behavioral theories provide a framework for identifying the critical factors underlying the performance (or nonperformance) of specific healthrelated behaviors. The more one knows about the determinants of a given behavior, the more likely it is that one can develop an effective communication intervention to reinforce or change that behavior. 28 Theory 29 Perhaps the most critical determinant of whether a person does or does not perform a given behavior is the person’s beliefs about performing that behavior.
