She has an appointment with an elderly couple in danger of losing their home and who want legal help to avoid the disaster. Upon listening to them for a few minutes during which time they talk about such things as what their daughter advised them and how hard they have worked all their lives, she imperiously tells them to get to the point.

In this chapter, I will concentrate on question (1) above but the answer to that question has implications for all of the others. I argue for the proposition that the learning goals in a university curriculum should be expressed in terms of the capabilities of learners on graduation. It should be noted that the capabilities-driven curriculum theory discussed in this chapter was developed in the late 1990s in Australia (Bowden et al. , accessed in 2000) independently from the comparable movement in the UK.
