IMPACT encourages organizations to adapt the model for use in diverse settings, such as case management and home health organizations, and even senior centers.

By randomly assigning individuals from one general pool, experimental designs rely on the probability that both groups will be similar; thus, if neither group received the program, we would observe the same outcomes in both groups (Anastas, 2000; Trochim, 2006). In this way, one can attribute any differences between the two groups to the intervention or, in the case of evidence-based research, the program model. Although most researchers strive to achieve an experimental design, in practice, there are multiple factors that often stand in the way of this occurring.

What Is a Promising Program or Practice? Although specific designations vary, organizations use their own rating systems to distinguish between the strongest programs, often called “effective” or “model” programs, from “promising” programs. Although having a lesser rating, experts believe these promising programs will someday prove to be evidence based with more time and rigorous evaluation.
