This view, therefore, has considerable implications for classrooms. Simply exposing students to new (forms of) inscriptions through books and lectures will not do. The semiotic and critical hermeneutic approach to reading taken here allows us to move towards a more integrated concept of literacy concerned with inscription practices more generally.

Educators sometimes are led to despair because students do not have the same cultural backgrounds. However, all students have already developed both experiences and representative forms to deal with these experiences. If we view actions and culture as texts then all students, even if they live in housing projects and inner-city districts, have an experiential basis from which literacy can develop. That is, rather than beginning the learning process with texts that typically describe white middle-class culture, school activities might well begin in the street.
