Considering there were at least 750 indigenous languages and estimates of over 1,000 different tribes found throughout the island of Papua New Guinea, what is written in this book would not apply to the whole country but primarily to the people in the area of the Eastern Highlands where we ministered. Sometimes just over the next mountain or around the next bend in the trail there are different customs and languages and even different styles of dress. Papua New Guinea is one of the most rapidly developing countries in the world; it took its place as an independent nation in 1975.
